Rosie Kat is a theatre and opera director originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne. Her work focusses on analysing behaviour and power dynamics, expressed through bold and highly physical performance.
Rosie trained at RWCMD, graduating with Distinction in MA Theatre and Opera Directing, after studying BA Drama and English Literature at the University of Birmingham.
She founded Y Opera in 2018; highlights include Mascagni's Zanetto, Donizetti’s Rita, devised live art opera He do the police in different voices, and online Gilbert and Sullivan adaptation The Mikado Is Watching You.
Rosie has worked as assistant and associate director at companies including Opera North, Welsh National Opera, Leeds Playhouse, Opera Holland Park, Grange Festival, and the Royal Opera House.
Rosie frequently directs and teaches in educational settings including RWCMD, Leeds Conservatoire, Sheffield Music Hub and National Opera Studio.
Rosie is passionate about engagement with young people and communities. She was the Director of Leeds Youth Opera from 2020-2022, highlights include The Enchanted Pig and the world premiere of ARC23 by Attridge and Murphy, as well as co-created climate crisis opera Project Ultimatum. For the 2022 Tete a Tete festival, Rosie also directed new opera The Journey with the Citizens of the World Refugee Choir.
In 2024 Rosie is directing community opera projects with Northern Opera Group and Music in the Round.
